I waited until we were well away from the portal leading from the Midsummer Court before expressing my ire.
“I leave you alone for one morning, and you get kidnapped by the Fairy Queen.”
“Is that something I should have known to expect?” he countered. I could tell from the surly edge in his voice that even if I said, “Yes,” he’d blame me for not having warned him.
He smacked at a low-hanging branch that extended over the trail we were following. I’d arranged for the portal to deposit us in the woods about a mile from the Faerie Gap, on the side “road” that would take us near the Gapway Theater. As long as we were here, Grace and I had decided to could do some investigation. I suppose we could have taken to the skies, but I wanted to have a talk with my padawan, and despite his earlier assertions about his free will, he seemed to naturally follow my lead.
I said, “No, that caught me by surprise, too. We’d figured you were taking a couple of days off, except McGrue came by demanding to know where you were.”
He brightened at the mention of Kitty McGrue looking for him, but then stopped. “Wait. What do you mean a couple of days?”
